When the ball was first kicked into play this season, Hannah Savoy could tell that her Mercer Island High School (MIHS) soccer squad was solid to the core.
With an abundance of talent and chemistry on their side, the Islanders blasted off to a 5-0-1 start and outscored their opponents 20-2 with five shutouts.
Fourth-year varsity Islander Savoy, a senior midfielder and two-year team captain, noted about the team (which stood at 5-2-1 at press time): “This year has definitely felt like our best year so far. It’s been really great just being able to lead this great group of girls. And we’re having a lot of fun.”
Rounding out the MIHS tri-captain crew are senior midfielder Hannah Hsu and senior defender Parker Friedman. In the scoring department, sophomore forward Hayden Feimster and senior forward Anna Carson have been leading the way thus far in the campaign.
One of Savoy’s favorite parts of playing MIHS ball has been learning how to work with a diverse set of teammates.
“Everybody has their own interests and stuff off the field. It’s really nice that we can just come together and all play a game we all like to play. It’s been great getting to lead everybody and get to know all these different people,” she said.
It’s been a plus playing for third-year head coach Erin Bourguignon as well, said Savoy, adding that the coach has them focused on playing a calm and simple game.
Savoy, who hopes to play college ball next year, possesses a 3.79 grade-point average at MIHS and specifically enjoys spending time in her AP biology class.
The Reporter asked Savoy a series of questions to get a behind-the-scenes glimpse into her life:
What’s your biggest pet peeve?
I think slow drivers probably.
I noticed that we had your dog barking in the background there. Are you a big animal lover?
Yeah. I had a pet gecko for a while, which was very fun. I like animals.
What kind of dog do you have?
She’s a Chihuahua and something else.
What’s her name?
Roxy.
What’s a really binge-worthy TV series that you’d recommend?
I just finished watching “Grey’s Anatomy,” and I really enjoyed it.
What provides inspiration for you?
I think a lot of it comes from my mom. She’s a very hard worker, a very independent woman, and that has inspired me a lot growing up.
What’s a special skill that you’d like to learn?
I think learning how to play an instrument, like the piano or something would be a really fun skill.
And going with that, what kind of music do you listen to?
A little bit of everything. Recently, I’ve been very into country music.
What would your dream job be?
I think something in the STEM field. Maybe working in a lab or something like that.
What’s a good piece of advice that you’d give a newcomer at school or on the soccer team?
I think just learning how to manage your time between school and soccer. Especially as a freshman, it gets pretty rough having practice every single day and having homework and just a lot of new stuff. So, learning what works for you, doing homework before practice or after practice, like study habits. Just get good at managing your time.
What superpower would you like to have?
I think being able to teleport would be very fun.
