Three Mercer Island students recently completed a swim around the Island, becoming some of the youngest students to do so.
On Sept. 27, Michael Bower, 15, Duncan Howard, 17, and Quinn Markwith, 15, started their swim at 7:10 a.m. at the Mercer Island Beach Club and finished at 1:40 p.m. that afternoon. All are members of the MIHS boys varsity swim team and Bellevue Club swim team.
According to Scott Bower, while there is not an official sanctioning body for Mercer Island swims, it is thought that Bower and Markwith are the first 15-year-olds to swim around the Island.
The trio was escorted around the Island by Jim Markwith, in the chase boat, Mike Howard in a kayak and Scott Bower as the food and drink passer.
Mercer Island has been listed as one of the top 23 circumnavigation swims in the country by www.10kswim.com, a site dedicated to information about open water swimming and racing. Mercer Island is listed as the 20th best swim, with routes around Manhattan Island taking the top spot and Alcatraz Island earning the second.
