Lacrosse
The Islanders boys lacrosse team beat Tahoma on Wednesday 14-1 to continue their current winning streak. The team remained undefeated at 11-0, keeping a hold on their first place position in the league.
In girls lacrosse action the Islanders beat Curtis Monday evening 18-4, as well as Tacoma on Wednesday with a final score of 16-8. The girls division I varsity squad is fifth place with a 9-2-2 record. The varsity division II team is in first place in their standings with a 12-1 record.
Boys soccer
The MIHS boys soccer team finished the regular season undefeated after dominating the Juanita Rebels 4-0 on Tuesday evening. Goals were scored by Danny Strome, Chris Morris and Nick Ward. The team’s first post season game will be May 19, at home, in the first round of the state tournament.
Baseball
The MIHS baseball team lost to Bellevue Monday evening, 12-2. After a week of rain cancellations the team will take on Liberty this evening at Liberty. The team is currently 8-10 overall and 7-10 in league.
Golf
The girls golf team finished up the regular season, once again undefeated, after wins over Inglemoor Tuesday and Ballard on Thursday.
The Islanders beat Inglewood by 23 strokes. Senior captain Lindsay Chinn finished with a 42 and freshman Chelsee Saelee finished overall with a 38. Coach Don Papasedero said he continued to expect the girls to work and play as a team, something they had been doing all season with success. On Thursday against Ballard the Islanders won with a final score of 218. Senior golf captain Lindsay Chinn said the final KingCo match of the season was good practice for the upcoming post season events. She said it would help the team prepare for the district and regional meets. Specifically she said keeping focused was a personal and team goal.
The team’s current winning streak is 23 straight matches, according to Papasedero. The team has lost four matches over the last five years.
The boys golf team picked up in the post-season after the winter break by attending the Egbers Memorial Tournament at Skagit Valley Community College in Mt. Vernon. The team was represented by Charlie Kern, Kyle Code and Crawford Leeds, according to head coach Tyson Peters. Kern, the only Islander to qualify for state, finished ninth overall at districts.
Track and field
The Mercer Island High School track and field team finished off the regular season with a meet at Mt. Si against Mt. Si and Cedarcrest.
Twenty-two members of the team earned finishes in the top three of their individual events. Members of the mens long distance team swept the 1,600 meter race taking first through third. Evan Sadler took first with a 4 minute 32 second finish. Quinn Chasan and Jacab Isenberg earned second and third places finishing four-tenths of a second apart.
Senior Janelle Chow brought home first place in the triple jump with a leap of 31 feet, 7.5 inches. Jordan Turner also earned first in the men’s triple jump at 41 feet 2.5 inches.
Defending pole vault state champion Bryce Borer finished the regular season with a pole vault win, passing 14 feet, 9 inches. He also earned first place in the 110 meter hurdles event with a 16.17 second race.
Senior Phoebe Merritt brought back two first place finishes in distance events, with a 800 meter time of 2:21.6 and a 1,600 meter race of 5:10.6.
Freshman Nicholas Sinclair earned a first place time in the 100 meter event with a 11.66 time.
The track team will now prepare for the KingCo Championships on Wednesday, May 13 at Eastlake High School.
Tennis
The MIHS girls tennis team kept their streak alive, beating Bothell High School on Thursday 9-0.
Chelsea Bailey kept Bothell’s Nicole Henderson from winning a set, going 8-0. In doubles Michele Zemplenyi and Julia Schubach beat Henderson and A.J. Otti 8-1.
Head coach Joyce Hedlund said the last match of the season was a lot like the first, cold, windy and rainy.
