The St. Monica 25-and-over coed softball team is looking for players for its summer league squad, “St. Monica’s TeamFun.” The squad will have one practice and one game a week. The team is competitive but the emphasis is on having fun. The team is looking for both female and male players. Country Club takes top two spots at competition
The Mercer Island Country Club teams took both first and second place at the Mercer Island Classic Cup tennis competition played March 10.
The teams only played each other once during the season, and it was for the championship.
The first-place team is comprised of captain Sharon Olson; Kim Beaty; Traci Brandon; Susan Cook; Barbara Frank; Ruth Jacobson; Ann Naden; Barbara Nicholson; Suzy Skone; Nancy Smith; Pattie Smith; Susan Stanley and the coach is Kelly Evernden. The second-place team is made up of co-captains Susie Harrington and Mary Kern and players Tanya Bednarski; Lee Anne Case; Kimberly Demuth; Jacque Hartman; Elaine Ingram; Joanne Jacoby; Rondi Johnson; Jill Rinearson; Amy Rudolf; Julie Sedlacek and the coach for the team is club manager Ash Mitha.
An awards luncheon and trophy presentation was held March 17.
The Greater Seattle Area Tennis League, in which the MICC plays, began in July 1986. It is composed of six levels of play, Evergreen Cup (entry level play), Emerald Cup, Classic Cup, Rainier Cup, Challenge Cup and Kingco Cup (4.5 and up players). The league includes teams from private and public tennis clubs from Federal Way (Ballys), Boeing, Bainbridge, Seattle Tennis Club, Amy Yee Tennis Center, Pro Club, Bellevue Club, Silver Lake in Lynnwood, Robinswood, etc. The league is governed by volunteers and the responsibilities are rotated each year to a different club.
The season starts in September and ends in March. Matches are played every week against a different team. Players compete against every team once. The scoring is a point system and the maximum score for each court in one point, the maximum score for each match is 3 points. Scores are reported online and the web site details who played, match scores, running totals, rules, etc.

Eve Hampton wins Kunishige Scholarship
Eve Hampton, a senior at Mercer Island High School, was awarded the second Wayne Kunishige Memorial Scholarship on March 12. The scholarship, was presented at the National Wheelchair Basketball Association Junior Division national competition, held in San Jose, Calif. last week. The honor is awarded to a high school senior who plans to attend college. The scholarship was endowed by the family and friends of Wayne Kunishige, a long time NWBA member, who passed away in December of 2000.
The scholarship, which includes a $1,000 cash award and a custom fit Quickie David Kiley All Court Wheelchair, is awarded to a high school senior, who is a rostered member of an NWBA team, has a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA, and is involved in extracurricular activities (school, church, volunteer, community, sports).
Eve Hampton is a member of the Seattle Junior Sonics Wheelchair Basketball Team. The Jr. Sonics, playing in their first nationals, placed seventh in the competition. An honor student, Hampton also is a member of the Mercer Island High School track team and the Northwest Wheelchair Sports wheelchair track team. Like Wayne Kunishige, Hampton contracted transverse myelitis when she was 13, and was rendered paraplegic. Shortly after her discharge from the hospital, she took up wheelchair sports. In 2004, she was named MVP at the national junior varsity wheelchair basketball competition. The holder of a number of national junior track medals in her division, Hampton has been named as a member of Team USA and will travel to Australia in April to compete in the Australian junior national games in track and basketball. Eve is also a second grade teacher at the Temple B’Nai Torah religious school. Through an independent study course at Mercer Island High School, Eve designed an elementary school disability education program and engages in disability education in the community. Hampton plans to attend college next year and to continue to be active in wheelchair sports.
Islanders take third championship of season
The Mercer Island sixth-grade boys basketball team defeated Mount Si, 56-42, to emerge as the champions of the 18 team Eastside Traveling League. After qualifying as one of the top eight finishers during the regular season, the Islanders posted wins over Issaquah, 53-49 and Bellevue, 65-54 on route to the championship game on March 6. It was the third tournament championship won by the Mercer Island sixth-grade team this season and improved their overall record to 38-6.
Members of the team include: Kyle Code, Ben Emanuels, George Jiranek, Charlie Kern, David Lee, Derek Newhof, Michael Orehek, David Peck, Michael Rambaldini, Andrew Smith, Quinn Sterling and Evan Thompson. The team is coached by Brad Chase, Erik Jensen and Dave Samp.
The Mercer Island sixth- and eighth-grade teams will participate in a benefit game on Saturday, March 26, at the Mercer Island High School gym. The eighth-grade game will begin at 5 p.m. and the sixth-grade game will start at 6:30 p.m. Half time entertainment will be provided by Krystal Clear and Krystal Chaos. Proceeds will benefit the M.I. Eastside FC93 girls compete for state cup
The Eastside FC GU11 team competed as semi-finalists in the state’s Commissioner’s Cup. The team competed all year in Washington State Youth League, the most competitive level of youth soccer available in Washington state, and earned its way to the semi-final round.
Team members include Celina Solomon, Lindsay Benster, Molly Goldberg and Eleni Gray of Mercer Island.
MIBGC looking for baseball umpires
The Mercer Island Boys & Girls Club is currently looking for baseball umpires for the 2005 spring and summer season. The club offers a Mustang Machine Pitch league (9-10-year olds), Mustang Player Pitch league (9-10 year olds) and a Bronco league (11-12 year olds).
Games are weekday evenings and Saturdays on Mercer Island. Pay depends on experience. The season begins the week of April 18 and will run until mid June. Their will be an additional summer season that will run from June till August.
