Students from Mercer Island High School and Newport High School have partnered with Seattle Adaptive Sports to hold a wheelchair basketball game between teams consisting of students and staff from Mercer Island and Newport High Schools vs. the Junior Sonics basketball team.
The event will take place at MIHS on Wednesday, April 20, with doors opening at 6 p.m. and the game starting at 7 p.m.
There will be a silent auction before and during the game as well as a raffle to fundraise for college scholarships for wheelchair basketball players.
All proceeds will go to Seattle Adaptive Sports player scholarships. This event is promoting Paralympic awareness. U.S. Paralympic Ski Team champion, Jim Martinson, will be speaking at the event.
By working directly in partnership with the Paralympics Foundation, Seattle Adaptive Sports is not only making adaptive sports more mainstream, but their combined efforts encourage colleges to implement academic scholarships and programs that provide athletes with disabilities with the same opportunities that athletes without disabilities have always had.
