The second annual Swim Across American Lake Washington swim was held last Saturday. The event, which raised money for the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, boasted 169 swimmers who crossed the finish line at Luther Burbank Park.

The 2-mile swim started at the Mercerwood Shore Club, ending at the swim beach at Luther Burbank, while the half mile swim was an out and back experience at the park.

There were 128 overall finishers in the 2-mile swim. Of those 66 were males and 62 were females.

Colleen Philipps, of Seattle, won the overall race with a time of 40 minutes and 11 seconds. Shortly behind her was Hannah Benson, also of Seattle, with a time of 40:19. Neil Butler, Seattle, was third with the same time as Benson, 40:19. Bellevue’s David Maguera took the fourth place finish one second behind Bulter and Benson at 40:20 and Mercer Island’s Scott Whelan finished fifth with a time of 41:12.

In the half mile race 41 people finished, with 19 of them being men and 22 of them women.

Olympic swimmer Jeff Float, who won a gold medal in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics in the 4×200 freestyle, took first in the half mile race with a time of 16:39. Mary-Jane Man, of Seattle, was second with a time of 16:55. BJ Philips was third in 17:38. Calin Schepler of Seattle took fourth with a time of 17:38 and Aaron Cohen was fifth in 18:08 overall.

All participants raised money to help fight cancer through the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. Other Olympians, such as Mary Wayte Bradburne, Camille Wright Thompson and Rick Colella were on hand to celebrate the event.
