Chase Warnick of Mercer Island High School grappled his way to sixth place in the 3A class 145-pound division at the Mat Classic XXXIV state wrestling tournament on Feb. 17-18 at the Tacoma Dome.
Warnick (40-9 overall this season) went 5-3 while battling in matches in the championship and consolation brackets.
He began his state journey with a 17-10 win over Ian Standifer of Spanaway Lake, and then lost to Jacob Gandy of Ferndale, 12-3.
Warnick then reeled off four straight wins in the consolation rounds against Milo Jones-Longstreet of Marysville Pilchuck (fall 4:11), Orion Rhinehart of Silas (9-2), Isaac Van Horn of Shorewood (8-1) and Marcus Reum of Peninsula (fall 4:24).
After losing to Tyson Ramsey of Ridgeline (fall 4:59) in the consolation semifinal, Warnick lost again to Gandy (fall 1:50) in the fifth-sixth-place match.
At the 3A Region 4 championship on Feb. 10-11 at Juanita High, Warnick placed fourth to qualify for state. Clark Koopman (152) and Luke Myklebust (182) were alternate state qualifiers with sixth-place finishes at regionals.
