Mercer Island High School (MIHS) freshman Emerson Woods made history by winning the Girls 3A SEA-King wrestling championships in the 115-pound weight class, becoming the first female wrestler in school history to capture a district title. The competition took place on Feb. 15 at Chief Sealth International High School.
As the only girl on the MIHS wrestling team this season, Woods’ achievement has earned her a spot at the WIAA State Wrestling Championships. Her victory also contributes to a record-setting milestone for the Mercer Island wrestling program, as the school will send an unprecedented 12 wrestlers to the state championships. The WIAA Mat Classic State Championship takes place on Feb. 20-21 at the Tacoma Dome.
