The Mercer Island High School wrestling team earned a couple of victories Saturday, Dec. 7 at the Clash of the Classes tournament at Skyline High School. The Islanders beat Eastlake 42-24 and Newport 54-30 while falling to Issaquah 31-30 and Skyline 52-28, bringing their record to 4-2 on the year.
The Islanders collected 14 pins throughout the tournament, with junior Luke Wilson pinning all four of his opponents. Against Eastlake, the Wolves’ Martin Miller pinned Kevin Pedersen to win the 113 match. Taylan Yuasa won the 120 match by forfeit, and Luke Wilson pinned Kushan Jobanputra to win the 126 match. Trevor Gullstad won the 132 match by forfeit, Jake Pruchno pinned John Monahan to win the 138 match, and Mike Ong pinned Rogan Kopper to take the 145 match. Kenji Walker won by major decision over William Galarpe in the 152 match, and Nic Meinzinger-Richards won by major decision over James Jensen in the 160 match. Eastlake’s Ryan Wasserman pinned Tanner Ranz to win the 170 match, while Evan Condon won by major decision over Jonnie Estrada in the 195 match. Eastlake’s Rudy Ross pinned Dylan Majewski to win the 220 match.
In the victory against Newport, Kevin Pedersen won by forfeit in the 106 match, and Taylan Yuasa won by forfeit in the 113 match. Luke Wilson pinned Adam Little to take the 126 match, Trevor Gullstad pinned Raymond Park to win the 132 match and Jake Pruchno won the 138 match by forfeit. Mike Ong pinned Alex Heide to win the 145 match, and Kenji Walker pinned Hamza Talat to take the 152 match. Newport’s Anders Ophus pinned Nic Meinzinger-Richards to win the 160 match. Evan Condon won the 195 match by forfeit, and Dylan Majewski won the 220 match by forfeit.
In a close finish with Issaquah, the Eagles’ Will Tickman won by major decision over Kevin Pedersen in the 106 match. Taylan Yuasa pinned Stephen Solusod to take the 113 match, and Luke Wilson pinned Eli Schier to win the 126 match. Issaquah’s Jordan Hamilton won by decision over Trevor Gullstad 7-4. Jake Pruchno won a 6-3 decision over Louden Ivey in the 138 match, and Scott Lee won a 10-6 decision over Seth Hartman in the 145 match. In the 152 match, Mike Ong pinned Brandon Vinceanu, and Evan Condon pinned Chance Gunter in the 195 match. Issaquah’s Terry Zaragosa pinned Dylan Majewski in the 220 match.
Finally against Skyline, the Spartans’ Zach Frober pinned Kevin Pedersen to win the 106 match, while Taylan Yuasa won the 113 match with a major decision over Kody Nguyen. Luke Wilson pinned Akash Yechuri to take the 126 match, and Trevor Gullstad pinned Nathan Jensen to take the 132 match. Skyline’s Tristan Steciw pinned Jake Pruchno to win the 138 match, Spartan Joseph DeMatteo won by major decision in the 145 match against Mike Ong, and Skyline’s David Ballint pinned Masa Kemmotsu in the 152 match. Evan Condon pinned Brennon Raphael to win the 195 match, and Dylan Majewski won the 220 match by forfeit.
