The Mercer Island wrestling team took second place during the KingCo championship tournament at Liberty High School on Saturday, behind a surprise champion in Bellevue.
Mercer Island finished just two points ahead of the host team with a team score of 186, as seven Islander wrestlers made it to the finals.
One of the biggest surprises of the tournament for the Islanders came at 112 pounds, as freshman Scotty Mills took the title.
A 3-0 decision against a Bellevue opponent during the finals will send Mills to districts as the No. 1 seed from the weight class.
Islander Phil Frazier was also a bit of a surprise, taking the 145 pound championship, also from a Bellevue opponent with a first-round pin (1:47).
Mercer Island sophomore Colton Knebel earned a bitter sweet title in a 189 pound weight class. Knebel defeated teammate senior Graham Horgdal during the finals thanks to an injury default. Both wrestlers qualified for districts.
Three more Islanders finished second during the meet. TJ Blackburn will compete at districts in the 215 pound division.
Senior David Bowman will represent Mercer Island at districts with the No. 2 seed in the 140 pound division and Blake Johnson will take the same seed in the 130 pound division.
The district meet will start at 10 a.m. on Saturday at West Seattle High School.
